ARREST

[“Neue Rheinische Zeitung”
No. 34 of July 4, 1848]

Cologne, 3 July. The Ministry of Action has so far proved its mettle only as a ministry of police. Its first act was the arrest of Messrs Monecke and Fernbach in Berlin. Its second was that of Bombardier* Funk in Saarlouis. Now the “action” is beginning to make itself felt here in Cologne as well. This morning, Dr Gottschalk and Lieutenant (ret.) Anneke were arrested. We still lack definite information as to the motives and the manner of the arrest. We therefore reserve our judgement.

The workers will be sensible enough not to allow themselves to be lured into a riot by any provocation.

* *Bombardier*: in Prussia, the lowest rank of non-commissioned officers in the artillery.
