[The 18th of March]

[Neue Rheinische Zeitung No. 249,
18 March 1849, Second Edition]

* Cologne, 18 March. We admit to our readers that today we are at a loss for a leading article. The Berlin March Revolution, that feeble echo of the Vienna Revolution, never fired us with enthusiasm. On 19 March 1848 Berlin sang: “Jesus, my trust in God!” This time, on 18 March, we advise honest Berlin to say: “Wrangel, my trust in God!”

The *Neue Rheinische Zeitung* will celebrate its anniversary only on 25 June.

And what will the *Kölnische Zeitung* do, i.e. the “Cologne bourgeoisie”?

On 22 March 1848 the *Kölnische Zeitung*’s main charge against Herr von Arnim was that he had banned the *Rheinische Zeitung*. Camphausen was not yet a minister at that time. This for the sake of clarification.

We still recall the happy time when Camphausen was our collaborator in Cologne! The relationship of the erstwhile Camphausen to us, and our present relationship to him – that is the secret of the March Revolution of 1848.

Written by Karl Marx.

[Neue Rheinische Zeitung No. 249,
18 March 1849, Second Edition]

* Cologne, 18 March. The organ of Frederick William IV, the *Neue Preußische Zeitung*, writes on the occasion of 18 March 1849:

“Woe, however, twice over to the people that festively celebrates its revolution; to sin is human, but to seek one’s honour in sin and celebrate one’s crime is devilish.”

The same paper, in the feuilleton of the same number, calls the struggle of 18 and 19 March a “bloody farce!” That is the worthy reward “for my people” for having made half a revolution.

Moreover, this paper reports that Wrangel went a few days ago to “inspect” the Friedrichshain.

We shall wait and see what Herr Wrangel will “inspect” on 18 March 1850.
