[Neuenahr] 15 August 1877

Dear Barry,

My address is: Dr K. Marx, Hotel Flora, Neuenahr, ‘Rhenish Prussia’.
Neuenahr is the name of the village, this spa does not even rank as a market town. It is completely cut off from the outside world; there are no railways within the confines of the Ahr valley.

From *The Times* – in the reading room of the Kurhaus! – I saw that you have published a communication concerning an action on the Eastern Question. Please inform me of the progress you are making in this respect.

Your devoted
K. M.

Would you be so good as to cash the enclosed cheque for £40 and send me the amount in two twenty-pound notes (of course Bank of England notes), by registered letter, via Ostend, to the above address. I once more write the name of the village: Neuenahr
(Hotel Flora is the name of the house I am living in).
