[Manchester, around 10 March 1866]

Confidential!!

Extract from a letter to Freiligrath, who asked me for information about a commercial philistine and at the same time expressed his regret about your illness and made benevolent remarks!

“Marx needs rest from night work and worry, along with sea air and good living. That will soon put him back on his feet. Fat burghers like Blind don’t suffer such things. For that, however, the poor man has the misfortune that, despite all the levers and thumbscrews applied, no one speaks of him except Blind himself. Such fellows have carbuncles on the inside of their skulls. But enough of the ‘deliberate liar’.

What are you doing, actually? I hear the Bank has ceased in London. For you, too, it may be all for the good; the connection with Fazy and consorts might have compromised you who knows how later.” You’ll be getting a decent post again soon enough.

In haste.
Yours,
F.E.
