Defeat of the German Troops at Sundewitt

* Schleßwig. So once again the German troops are beaten, once again German-Prussian policy has suffered a brilliant defeat! That is the result of the solemn promises about a united, powerful Germany! – The time when the first victory should have been exploited is allowed to slip away in futile negotiations, into which the enemy enters only under compulsion in order to gain time for fresh resistance. And when Russia declares that it will intervene if Jutland is not evacuated, one still does not perceive what lies at the bottom of the whole armistice offer, one lacks the courage to accept the threatened struggle, the struggle with Russia, the long-awaited, the unavoidable one! No, the policy of force does not know how to help itself; it gives way cravenly, and on the retreat the “brave” Guards are defeated by the “little” Danes! If there is not open treason at play here, then such immense incapacity is displayed that in any case the direction of the whole affair must be placed in other hands. Will the National Assembly at Frankfurt finally see itself compelled to do what would long since have been its duty, i.e., to take foreign policy itself into its own hands? Or will it here too – “trusting that the governments will do what is their office” – proceed to the order of the day?
We append below, from the “Schleßw. Holst. Ztg.”, the report of the Danish attack at Sundewitt.
