Dear Engels,

Enclosed 1 copy of the *Presse*, containing some details that may perhaps interest you. The fellow Friedländer naturally does not reply. However, I now explain the matter to myself thus: Lassalle, of course, preached the tendentious sermon to Friedländer not only in his own name, but also in mine. F. believes that I am one body and soul with Heraclitus the Obscure. Thus, naturally, he cannot entertain the idea that I can write for a Viennese paper under present circumstances. The Vienna *Presse* daily contains covert polemic against the Berlin know-it-all. Thus, e.g., in a leading article of 29 May: “But one expects national honour from those speculative minds who perceive in Napoleon III the avenging arm of history, and who complacently mirror the clumsiness, pedantry and sterility of their own categorising intellect in his alleged genius for liberating peoples.” The very importunity with which L. requested me to write no more to his cousin proves that the fellow has also been cheating in my name. Thus the beast has spoilt my best prospect for the summer. Besides, it was good for certain eventualities if I had a hand in the Vienna *Presse*.

When you write again about Garibaldi, whatever may be his fate, make fun of this turn, only possible for the “nephew of the uncle”, that with him the free-corps leader figures as the Hero. Imagine such a thing under the old Nap.! Incidentally, the Paris correspondent of *The Times* writes today that the Bonapartists are already grumbling loudly about G.’s “fame” and that “a few select police” have been smuggled into his corps, who report on him in detail. In complete accordance with Mazzini’s instruction, G. did not name Bonaparte in his proclamation. Incidentally, M.’s last thing is not as good as I thought. I had read only extracts hastily. His old grumbling against socialism. We can do nothing with him directly. But he can be usefully employed as an authority against Kossuth, etc. Incidentally, from his latest issue, which I shall send you at the end of the week, you will once again become acquainted with Herr Karl Blind’s importance.

Salut,
Yours
KM

Incidentally, Blind is out of the *Hermann*, but is very much mistaken if he speculates on getting into the *Volk*. Weak as the little rag is, it has sent the entire local emigration into rage and foam. Among others, Tausenau & Co., paid by Kossuth-Bonap., to manufacture German “opinion” in London.
