28 May.
Dear Engels,

Enclosed you will find the following letter from Dana. What reply shall I make?

À propos. I have now learned through Biskamp, whose informant is the clown himself, that Bruno Bauer was positively paid by Russia. He received 300 Friedrichsd’or from the Russian envoy von Budberg. The clown was engaged as an accomplice. Bruno broke it off because Budberg did not treat him “respectfully” and had him wait in the antechamber. His journey to England was intended to enable the pair of brothers – par nobile fratrum – to try the business with the English government. Fell, of course, into the dirt. What do you say to this?

Salut
