Dear Marx,

On 24 Feb., Wednesday, I sent you a registered letter containing RJ 56 641 Manchester 16 Jan. 1857, a five-pound note. I hope you have received it; if not, stop payment at the bank immediately. This evening I am also sending you various *Guardians*; last Wednesday a packet of them went off together with the letter. In today’s you will find something interesting about Orsini.

The infamy with which Pam, on his exit, caused all sorts of political persecution here to be instituted — Bernard, Allsop, & now the poor devil of a publisher — is truly amusing, but John Bull will not be led astray by that from his truly British minister, hardly that a little growling is heard here and there about the 2 *cives Romani* in Naples. Verily, this fellow has taken himself off with great stench.

From today’s *Guardian* you will also see that in Preston &c. short time is still the order of the day. It will soon be general again. The manufacturers are losing on most things at current prices, the spinners can still barely hold out, in a few articles do well. As soon as the rise checks demand (up to now the fear of still higher prices has momentarily accelerated it), that too will cease, and the sauce begins again from the start.

Yours,
F.E.I
