Dear Lupus,

I shall make enquiries here today about Mr Kendall and let you know tomorrow what I find out about him. To go and see him now, before you have had an answer from him and some prospect that he is considering you, would only lead to his putting me off with a very cool and half-hearted response. These gentlemen are extremely formal. Hain recently applied for a position with this same Kendall, and immediately referred to me; however, K. did not consider it worth the trouble to make enquiries of me about him – were I to importune K. after this incident, it could only harm your case. As soon as you have an answer from K., let me know, and what he writes to you; I shall then go to him at once and obtain every kind of information for you, and I shall do my best to dispose the man favourably towards you. To be sure, if you had Hassenpflug’s wanted posters at your heels you would be engaged immediately. All the same, it will work out even so. If I could procure some position for you here, that would be splendid; unfortunately however I have too few acquaintances in this line, and private tutors here are employable only for modern languages, and of those there are enough. For the rest, I shall see about setting Watts in motion – the fellow is in the educational movement and has now a mass of connections.

Yours,
F.E.

In future, moisten the gum of your envelopes better – your letter arrived open.
