Karl Marx to Heinrich Heine
in Paris

Paris, end of January – 1 February 1845

Dear Friend,

I hope to have time to see you tomorrow. My departure takes place on Monday.

The bookseller Leske has just been to see me. He is bringing out a quarterly journal in Darmstadt, free from censorship. I, Engels, Hess, Herwegh, Jung, etc., are collaborating. He has asked me to solicit your cooperation – poetry or prose. You will certainly not refuse, since we must take every opportunity to establish ourselves in Germany itself.

Of all that I leave behind here in the way of human beings, the Heine I leave behind is the most disagreeable to me. I should like to pack you up with me. Give my regards and my wife’s to your wife.

Yours,
K. Marx
