2 Dec. 1863

Dear Frederick,

Two hours ago a telegram arrived saying that my mother is dead. Fate demanded one from the house. I myself already stood with one foot in the grave. Under the given circumstances, I am in any case still more necessary than the old woman.

I must go to Trier on account of the settlement of the inheritance. I was very doubtful what Allen would say, as I have only been taking a half-hour convalescent walk every day for the last 3 days.

Allen, however, giving me 2 enormous medicine bottles, even thinks it a good thing that I am going. The wound has not yet stopped suppurating, but I shall find enough good Samaritans on the whole journey to put the plaster on.

I must now ask you to send me enough money by return of post so that I can start the journey to Trier at once.

Salut
D
