15 July.

Dear Engels,

Best thanks for the £10, of which the first instalment arrived today.
I hear that Herr Gumpert was here; he did not visit me. Well, I
shall try to do without him.

Enclosed 1 Press and two very shrewd “Speeches” by Lassalle.

The enclosed letter from L. was brought by the Austrian “Captain
retired” Schweichert, a good, stupid fellow. The point is that Rüstow –
moreover supported by 2 Rüstow brothers – wanted, or wants, to use the National
Association, the Gymnastics Association, etc., in order to have at his disposal,
at least in the smaller German states, a citizen militia which, at the decisive
moment, is to be confronted with the army and commanded by Herr Rüstow.
The plan is devilishly stupid. And on top of that, the money for it is
supposed to come from London! I do not believe that Lassalle shares these
delusions. For him it is only a matter of making himself important to the
Schweicherts and the like.

I hope that you will in any case come to London in the course of the
season. Jennychen is no longer unwell, but she has become more delicate
than she ought to be according to her constitution. A sea-bath must, by
the by, be procured for her under all circumstances.

Is Lupus already in Germany?

How about the “associates” of the British Association? Are the old cards
still valid? Lupus had mine.

Salut
D
