Karl Marx
On Karl Blind

*Die Arbeiter Union.*
No. 79, August 23, 1870

London, July 29.

Herr Karl Blind made a patriotic speech at a German meeting in the Turnhalle. This comedian presented it as a very important, world-shaking event that he, the German Brutus, had suspended his republicanism on the altar of the fatherland. That was Act I.

Act II. Karl Blind personally describes, in the London *Deutsche Post*, that meeting, exaggerating its numbers, importance, etc., in his usual fashion.

Act III. Karl Blind writes an anonymous letter to the *Daily News*, in which he movingly depicts the effect produced throughout Germany by the great speech delivered by Karl Blind at the meeting in the Turnhalle. All German journals, he says, have reproduced it. One of them, the *Berliner Volkszeitung*, has even dared (!) to print it in full. (The gentleman is a correspondent of the *Volkszeitung*.) Viennese papers, too, did not allow the momentous event to pass by without a trace. (The gentleman himself had corresponded about it to the Vienna *Neue Freie Presse*.)

This is one of a thousand examples of how this ant-lion tries to foist upon the English the notion that he is a kind of German Mazzini.
