The Situation

* Paris, 29 January. The eve of the struggle is here; the parties stand facing one another, rifle in arm. On one side the Legitimists, Orleanists, Bonapartists, on the other the tricolour and red republicans. The ones entrench themselves behind the President, the “chosen of the 6 million”, the others behind the sovereign constituent National Assembly; the ones reckon on the army and the three royalist legions (1st, 2nd and 10th), the others on the republican and Mobile Guard, on the three republican legions (4th, 5th and 9th) and on the people disarmed in June.
