Italy. July 30, 1848

Italy.

Milan, July 19. Garibaldi is commissioned to proceed between Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda and there to guard the Tyrolean passes. At the same time, as an experienced ship’s captain, the vessels on those lakes are entrusted to him, in order to frustrate any hostile expedition there.

* Genoa, July 20. For some time, such a mass of captured Austrian officers, who are allowed to move about freely on parole, have been brought here that the people felt alarmed. For the reactionary party, supported by the considerable funds of the Jesuits and their skilful intrigues, is unceasingly active in stirring up a section of the workers on the harbour and in other parts of the city, in order to bring an émeute to pass. Under such circumstances, the Austrian officers are quite naturally a very suspect element. The local papers have been discussing this subject for some days, and pressing for the officers to be removed to a fortress on the French frontier. Yesterday evening, a great demonstration on the part of the people took place. Assembled before the governor’s house, it demanded the removal of the said officers and expressed its indignation in particular at the fact that those gentlemen strut about the streets in civilian clothes, with the double eagle on their breast, which they perhaps earned in the Galician massacres, and with the black-and-yellow cockade. They should be treated humanely, but removed from Genoa; the people want no contact with the Galician butchers and the murderers of their brothers and relatives. The governor promised to report immediately to the ministry and to obtain orders. The people dispersed upon this promise.
