Italy. June 26, 1848
Italy.
* Milan, June 15. A dispatch from Bassano reports that the mountain dwellers of S. Nazzaro gave the Austrians coming from Solagna a sound lesson. The enemy was allowed to pass quietly up to the middle of the mountain, and then the laid mine was exploded, by which the Austrians lost 380 men killed and 30 wounded. Many sought their safety in the Brenta, where they drowned.
† Rome, June 10. Early this morning Gioberti left here, accompanied by an escort of carabinieri which Minister Galetti personally offered him. Gioberti is travelling as a commercial traveller of monarchism to Terni, Perugia, Macerata, Ancona, Bologna, Florence. He plays the destroying angel towards the republicans and will everywhere set up commandites to bring the monarchist articles and principles, which now as dead stock find little demand, again into vogue and to dispose of them.
* Florence, June 12. This morning the last section of the Leopold Railway was opened and solemnly consecrated. The archbishop officiated at the religious part of the ceremony. Immense crowds of people had streamed to the festival. All was jubilation and enthusiasm.
* Bologna, June 10. The Neapolitan cavalry distributed in the vicinity of Modena is beginning to become intolerable. It is necessary that it soon makes up its mind either to return to Naples, if it wants to brand itself as a common band of mercenaries and a venal tool of the executioner there, or to cross the Po and join the fight for Italy’s independence. The population threatens more strongly from day to day that it will sound the alarm and compel all Neapolitans to march off. We hear that the nine battalions returning to Naples, when they had reached Jesi, refused to march further from fear of the popular demonstrations, which became more energetic with every step. Meanwhile their military chest is running out, and unless they want to starve, they will have no choice but to march against the Austrians.
* Verona, June 14. The local postal inspectorate announces today that the postal connection with Trieste and Vienna via the direct line through Vicenza and Friuli has been re-established and that a courier with mail bags will depart daily. The conveyance of money and other packages remains excluded for the time being.
Naples, June 12. From the provinces it is reported that the insurgents have defeated the accomplice of “Ferdinando Borbone”, the notorious General Nunziante, together with his troops at Pizzo and have captured him.
