Italy. 20 September 1848
Italy.
* Genoa on 11 September held a small auto-da-fé with an issue of the Turin journal “Tribuna del Popolo”. It contained an article about the latest events in Genoa, as venomous as it was stuffed with lies. Amid cries of: “Into the fire with the Jesuit rag! Down with the reactionaries! Down with the camarilla!” the paper in question was burned by the people. The prorogation of the Chambers to 16 October has caused great excitement here. The association, acting under Gioberti’s chairmanship, for bringing about the Confederation of Italy, has presented an address to Minister Pinelli, which the latter promised to communicate to his colleagues. In it, protest is made in advance against any conclusion of peace which should run counter to the principle of the independence and confederation of Italy. The bombarding majesty in Naples has prorogued the Chambers until 30 November. If things go on in the same way, they will not meet again at all.
