* Florence, 2 July. An article in the “Alba” rightly attacks the present conduct of the war by Charles Albert, which consists in quietly looking on, a few reconnaissances, etc. “Italians!” says this journal, “we undertook a revolutionary war while our revolutions had not yet been carried to an end. A Jesuit germ still continues its existence among us. The Roman and Tuscan countryside is infected by the most unbelievable insolence of a party that counts among its most zealous servants the servants of God. We began a new war with old weapons; we entrusted the fate of freedom to the old tools of tyranny. Hence, from whence the thunderbolt of war was to descend upon Austria, there came a word of peace, as if the Vatican, still engaged in its former flirtation with Austria, feared that it would have to perish with the latter.” – In yesterday’s Chamber of Deputies, an important question came up for decision. It concerned the validity of the election of a civil servant. It was declared void. With this, the first step is taken to exclude all civil servants as such from the Chamber of Deputies.
* Rome, 28 June. The Austro-Jesuit party is busily at its work. The Pope is daily more enmeshed in its net, and a section of the people is stirred up against the ministers and deputies by the most infamous intrigues. Meanwhile the ministry continues to fight courageously, and the deputies, for their part, know what the situation of Rome and Italy demands of them.
