Italy. July 14, 1848

* London, July 11. The House of Commons, in yesterday’s sitting, again occupied itself with the question of the sugar duties.
The *Times* to-day devotes a leading article full of scorn and baseness to the convicted Chartists. “A very mild punishment,” says this paper among other things, “was meted out to all of them yesterday, more by way of a bow than a punishment. Leisure, for those declared guilty, for two short little years, in order to take a retrospective view of their past life in a comfortable prison, and then: security for their good behaviour after their release; that was the whole punishment.”
