The Defeat of the Austrians at Peschiera

* For the edification of our readers we give today the following Austrian reports on the ignominious defeats of the so-called “German”, i.e. Croatian and Pandour, “arms” from the 29th to the 31st of May. The lameness of the lie really arouses compassion.

Verona, 4th June. So Peschiera is said to have fallen into the enemy’s hands after all! Hunger has vanquished it. The attempted provisioning from the lake has therefore not succeeded! The poor fortress was most closely besieged for more than six weeks and defended itself against two enemies, the foreign one and hunger. The commander receives reinforcements – and, after having previously suffered some loss of time and lives before Vicenza entirely uselessly, marches off into the wide world, only not to where the core of the enemy’s power lay, and where his help would have been most needed! Since the, incidentally glorious (!), action at Curtatone nothing more has been heard of him. (A.A.Z.)

Verona, 4th June. Mantua appears to be threatened with flooding, as the enemy only needs to open the sluices of the lake which is in his hands. The army is expected back in Verona tomorrow, since the enemy’s line of communications has been completely established by the fall of Peschiera, and the small garrison left behind with us would be able neither to hold Verona in the event of a main attack nor to prevent the cutting of the connection with Tyrol. The losses suffered by the army are now all the more painful as they are fruitless! What a misfortune for the brave army to be under such leaders! (A.A.Z.)
