The Camphausen Ministry

* Renair, 29 May. A society has been formed here under the name “La Sentinelle”, the members of which mutually bind themselves to pay the forced loan decreed by the Rogier ministry only if they are compelled to do so in the true sense of the word.
The refusal of the forced loan is gaining ground in all parts of Belgium. It appears that the Belgian population is beginning to calculate how much it costs to treat astonished Europe to the touching spectacle of monarchical enthusiasm.
One must, moreover, compare the trade returns of the years 1845, 1846 and 1847 to convince oneself of the economic miracles which the constitutional monarchy brings to maturity in its hothouse.
In 1845 Belgium exported 703,478 kilogrammes of linen yarn; in 1847, only 233,045. In 1845 it exported 2,594,528 kilogrammes of flax; in 1847, only 1,893,711. In 1845 it exported 1,090,606 kilogrammes of fabrics of flax, hemp and tow; in 1847, only 468,196, etc.
