Welden's Report on the Operations against Venice

* From Upper Italy, 4 July. A war report by General Welden, which
No. 42, 12 July 1848

extends to 30 June, confirms the occupation of the important Fort Cavanella, which commands the great lagoon passage, so that Venice was deprived of drinking water and restricted to the poor water of the artesian wells. The ice-house of Venice also fell into the hands of the Imperial troops. From the many persons emigrating from Venice it was learned that there was a garrison of 21,000 men there. Malghera has a garrison of 1,800 men and 60 cannon. It can only be taken by regular siege. Brondolo is occupied by 1,000 Neapolitans and provided with 40 cannon. From there up to the Lido 3,000 men are stationed. That shows sufficiently that Venice will not be easily conquered, as most German newspapers try to make their readers believe.
