Engels to Laura Lafargue in Paris

London, 14 Dec. 1882

My dear Laura,

Your letter I received yesterday evening at half past nine; already too late to send you a few lines by this morning’s post, as foreign letters posted here after nine are not forwarded before the following evening.

I have practically no money in the house and have given Percy a cheque so that he can cash it for me in the city today. But he can’t be back here until six at the earliest, and that is too late to send you a banknote by the 5.30 post. But as soon as I have the money, I will send you something to tide you over the first few days. No doubt it will be with Paul as with Guesde and Bazin, and he will be free again, if not today, then by tomorrow at the latest, as soon as the ridiculous hearing before the strict Piquand is over. I have forwarded both Paul’s and your letter to Mohr and this morning told Nim the story.

More later, when I can send you tangible comfort.

With affection,
Yours,
F. Engels
