My dear Sidoroff,

I have — your last two —, if I have not been able to answer you earlier, lay it at the door of that *Molodets* Bakunin who makes endless work for us with his intrigues. The affair is approaching an acute stage, and open war will break out shortly in the press. It is an open split at which they are aiming. At last, the thing will be decided before long; the details are too long and too tedious for me to try to give them to you. It goes without saying that, with these stupidities on our hands, neither Johnson nor I can find time to work.

I thank you for your new outlay on my behalf, in the matter of the *Gazette des Tribunaux*.

As for Wróbl[ewski], we had already been informed by Rozwadowski, who has left his first post but found another a few days later. We have done everything in our power, but with the man’s obstinate and fiercely proud character we have had to take a good many precautions; however, we believe we have succeeded to the point that at least he does not lack the bare necessities. You know that he refuses help from any doctor; it will be more difficult to overcome this prejudice.

Johnson has had a slight bout of bronchitis and one or two *furunculi*, more troublesome than serious; he attended Council yesterday for the first time in a month. Otherwise he is tolerably well. We are having abominable weather here, which gives colds to everyone.

As for the intrigues here on the spot, they lose importance every day. The few decent people who had allowed themselves to be drawn in have withdrawn and left the field clear for the pure rabble, whom no one bothers about any more — in Switzerland it is worse because Malon etc. have fallen into the trap over there, some through weakness, others through vanity. So much the worse for them — the world cannot stand still on account of their blunders!

Ever yours,
F. E.
