Sir,

I declare that the letter attributed to me, in which I am made to speak of Monsieur Assi, is a forgery, like all those that have been attributed to me by the Paris newspapers.

I have never concerned myself with Monsieur Assi, either privately or publicly, with one exception. A few days after the Revolution of 18 March, the London newspapers published a telegram according to which this Revolution had been prepared by me in secret collaboration with Blanqui and Monsieur Assi, who were supposed to have come to London to come to an understanding with me; I then declared in the *Times* that all this was fairy tales fabricated by the French police.

I have the honour to salute you,

Karl Marx.

Sir,

In reply to your three questions:

1) “Is the International in any way concerned with the hieroglyphic signs received?” I answer: No.
