30 March 1871

Dear Imandt,

The “Letter” is a product of the Parisian rag *Paris-Journal* in its issues of 14 and 19 March. A statement by me on the matter appeared in *The Times*, March 22 (small-type notice shortly after the end of the leading articles). That lousy paper stands in direct connection with the Prussian police. Its editor-in-chief, the notorious H. de Pène, received, as his reward, two bullets in his body as a member of the “peaceful” procession of the parti de l’ordre. Greetings to Bourbaki junior. Strangely enough, the entire reactionary press in France reprinted the pseudo-letter. To give the affair more piquancy, *Paris-Journal* published it under the high-flown title: “Le Grand Chef” (translation of Stieber’s “Hauptchef”) “de l’Internationale”.

Salut
Your K. M.
