Marx to Engels

in Manchester

Ramsgate, 30 August 1870

Dear Fred, |

Tomorrow morning by steamer* back to London. Firstly, the stay here for 5 people is very expensive, as the English have overcrowded all the seaside resorts because of the war.

Secondly: the accommodation, relatively to the price, is damn ‘draughty’.
The great pains have ceased, but a certain spot is almost as if paralysed, so that I must consult the doctor again.

Further details from London.

‘The Spectator’ – 8 days since? – declared your articles to be the only important ones in the English press, but regretted that the author was so chary of his words and his facts.*

Apropos. Borkheim came here yesterday on a visit from Margate. What seemed to bore him: He actually wanted to write your articles, had offered himself to the ‘Pall Mall’ before us, and went away with a long face.
