London, 23 Jan. 1869

Dear Fred,

We all hope that things are better again at No. 86, Mornington Street.
Scarlet fever is raging, it seems, throughout the whole of England. But perhaps
Gumpert was mistaken about Mary Ellen! Tussy sends her best compliments to her and Mrs Burns?.

In our house, on the other hand, colds and coughs prevail. In my case
the thing was so bad that for almost a fortnight I “threw up” continually, to express myself in the elegant language of Mrs Blind.
I went out again for the first time yesterday and am smoking a cigar today by way of experiment.

Jennychen, who is also coughing badly, sends you the enclosed photograph.
She wants the Büchner back, because she has studied Darwin and now wants
to make the acquaintance of the great Büchner too. The cross (on Jennychen’s
photograph) is a Polish 1864 insurrection cross.!?#

Tussy had taken charge of announcing the wine, etc., and believes to this
day that she has in fact carried it out.

Enclosed 2 Borkheimiana.!?#”! So that he may at least deposit his “super-spirits” somewhere and not din my ears full, I have recommended him to write “Russian Letters” for “Zukunft”. Nous verrons.?

I see from the “Money Market Review” that Knowles counts 7s. 6d. in £.*
How is that worthy?

With best greetings to the whole house.

Yours,
Mohr
