I have written to Borkheim to procure a new Russian book: Zemlyá i vólya, Land and Freedom, in which a German Russian, a landowner, proves that since the introduction of peasant emancipation the Russian peasant is going to ruin on account of communal property, and Russian agriculture – small-scale and large – ditto. The book is said to contain much statistical evidence. Exchange-value has already penetrated too deeply into these primitive communities for the thing to appear still tenable after the abolition of serfdom.

Tomorrow I hope again to receive good news from you. Best greetings meanwhile to the patients, your wife and the Lafargues.
