[to "Essays for Volunteers"]

From the pamphlet
"Essays addressed to Volunteer",
London and Manchester 1861.
Translated from the English.

The following articles were originally written for "The Volunteer Journal, for Lancashire and Cheshire" and are now republished in their present form at the request of the proprietors of that journal, since they appear to consider the articles worthy of a wider circulation among the Volunteers than is possible in a periodical of a more or less local character. Whether this view is correct the public will have to decide. It will scarcely be necessary to premise that the facts contained in these articles, such as those on the rifle, on the French light infantry, etc., are neither new nor original; on the contrary, such articles are necessarily in great part compilations from other sources, which, however, it will not be necessary to enumerate; the only portion of these articles which can be regarded as an independent contribution are the conclusions at which the author arrives and the views which he expresses.
