[Letter to the Editor of the "Daily Telegraph"]

To the Editor of the "Daily Telegraph"

Sir,

In your issue of today you publish, under the heading "The Journalistic Henchmen of Austria", a letter full of slanderous and scandalous imputations against my person. This letter, purportedly written in Frankfurt am Main, but probably composed in Berlin, is in reality nothing but a clumsy amplification of two articles from the Berlin "National-Zeitung" of the 22nd and 25th of January of this year, which newspaper will have to answer for its slanders before a Prussian court of law. The
false pretext
on which Vogt launched his slanders against me is the assertion that I am the author of the anonymous
German
pamphlet "Zur Warnung", which was first circulated in London and later reprinted in the Augsburg "Allgemeine Zeitung". From the enclosed reprint you will see that I have challenged my adversaries to have this matter legally decided in an English court of law.

In conclusion, I call upon you, unless you prefer to be sued for libel, to make an amende honorable in your next issue for the levity with which you dare to besmirch a man of whose personal character, political past, literary works, and social standing you, as you cannot but admit, have not the faintest notion.

Your most obedient servant,

Dr. Karl Marx
