Vogt, who knows his Pappenheimers, manoeuvred very shrewdly when he shifted the origin of the denunciation against him from the so‑called democratic camp to the socialist one. I, for my part, however, have absolutely no interest in giving currency to this *quid pro quo*, and I therefore cannot leave Blind’s declaration in No. 313 of the *Allgemeine Zeitung* unanswered.

1. On 9 May, on the platform of an Urquhartite meeting, Blind communicated to me all the charges raised against Vogt in the leaflet *Zur Warnung*. He told the same details to others, e.g. Freiligrath. Given the complete identity in content and language between his oral account and the printed leaflet, he naturally passed, *de prime abord*, as its author.

2. In the London *Free Press* of 27 May there appeared an anonymous article by Blind with the heading “The Grand-Duke Constantine to be King of Hungary”, which essentially anticipates the leaflet *Zur Warnung*. In this article Blind declares that he knows liberals in Germany and democrats in London who have been offered “large bribes” for Bonapartist propaganda. While the Vogt trial was pending, Mr D. Collet, the responsible editor of the *Free Press*, called on me to request me, on Blind’s behalf, to make no use of my knowledge of the authorship of the said article. I replied to Mr Collet—who found this entirely proper—that I committed myself to nothing, but that my discretion would depend on Blind’s behaviour.

3. Fidelio Hollinger’s declaration is simply ridiculous. Fidelio Hollinger knows that he formally violated English law when he issued the leaflet without indicating the place of printing. He therefore, with his own hand, issues himself the testimonial that he did not commit the peccadillo. By chance, the reprint in the *Volk* was pulled from the typesetting of the leaflet which was still standing in Hollinger’s printing shop. Thus, even without witness testimony, by simple comparison between the leaflet and its reprint in the *Volk*, judicial proof could be furnished that the former “had issued from the printing office of F. Hollinger”. The transfer of the trial from Augsburg to London would, in general, solve the whole Blind-Vogt mystery.
