[Letter to the Editor of the “Allgemeine Zeitung”]

[“Allgemeine Zeitung” No. 300 of 27 October 1859]

19 Oct. 1859. 9, Grafton Terrace, Maitland Park,

Haverstock Hill, London.

Sir! So long as I had a hand in the German press, I attacked the “Allg. Ztg.”, and the “Allg. Ztg.” attacked me; this naturally in no way prevents me from being of assistance to the “Allg. Ztg.”, as far as I can, in a case in which it has, I am convinced, fulfilled the
first
duty of the press, that of denouncing humbug. The
enclosed document
would be a
judicial
document here in London.

I do not know whether it is so in
Augsburg
. I procured the said document because Blind refused to stand by the statement he made to me and others, which I retailed to Liebknecht, and which left him in no doubt about the denunciation contained in the anonymous pamphlet.

Your most obedient servant

Dr K. Marx

Editor of the former “Rheinische Zeitung” (Footnote by the editors of the “Allgemeine Zeitung”)
