The above financial statement was submitted and approved at the meeting of the Workers’ Association of 30 July of this year. The books and receipts are available for inspection by the senders of the money or their agents. As contributions came in very sparsely during the month of June and the distress of the refugees was often unbearable, the establishment of a common dwelling and eating house for the refugees was resolved upon. The local Workers’ Association, as well as a part of the refugees who had already found work, made it possible through their contributions to begin the execution of this plan. With the money that came in later the house could be furnished with the necessary utensils and furniture. Up till now 18 refugees have found accommodation in it and about 40 board. The unemployed shoemakers among the refugees were first employed to provide their comrades with the necessary footwear. The Committee has since allocated funds and taken the necessary steps to set up a common industrial occupation for the refugees in the stated premises and to allow them to earn a part of their own maintenance costs.

If this first experiment proves successful, the undertaking will be carried out on a larger scale and in due course further communication will be made to the public on the matter. The Committee expects that this twofold undertaking of support and of the industrial occupation of the refugees can be maintained by numerous contributions from Germany until the refugees are in a position to support themselves.
