The Committee, founded on 18 September 1849, has since its inception supported about a hundred refugees for shorter or longer periods; the total amount of funds that have passed through its hands amounts to £161 7½. In addition, the Workers’ Association has covered extraordinary needs of individual refugees through collections, found work for others, and placed its premises and newspapers at the disposal of all refugees.

The books and receipts pertaining to the above financial report, which was submitted to the German Workers’ Association and approved by it, are held by the treasurer of the Committee for inspection by the senders of money or their authorised representatives.

The gentlemen Struve, Bobzin, Bauer (Stolpe) and others have recently found it necessary to put forward their names in order to attract sufficient money subsidies from Germany for the refugees. They have accordingly grouped a number of refugees around themselves and yesterday constituted their own committee in a meeting. It goes without saying that this renewed attempt to form a side-committee cannot distract us in our work for the refugees any more than the earlier failed attempts.

As the financial report shows, the committee’s funds are so depleted that they can scarcely cover the needs of another week. Moreover, new refugees are still reporting daily for support. We therefore urge the German Social-Democratic Party once again not to abandon their refugees and to send their contributions as soon as possible to the treasurer C. Pfänder, 21, King Street, Soho, London.
