[State of Siege Everywhere]

[*Neue Rheinische Zeitung* No. 150, November 23, 1848, Extra Supplement]

*Cologne*, 22 November. We prophesied kicks for the Cologne municipal council as the answer to its petition to the king. <See “The Municipal Council”> We were mistaken. The municipal council has indeed received kicks, but not from the king, from Manteuffel-Brandenburg. *Tant pis!* <so much the worse!> We further said that, after the decision of the Frankfurt Parliament, it was the duty of the Left to walk out. <See “The Frankfurt Assembly”, p. 44> We now hear that not only the Left but also the left centre have walked out, in order to form a democratic central committee. *Tant mieux!* <so much the better!>

States of siege, those are the achievements of the March revolution. Düsseldorf in a state of siege! One besieges a city in order to conquer it. All the towns of Prussia are being declared, one after another, in a state of siege, to be reconquered. The whole of Prussia must be reconquered, because the whole of Prussia has become disloyal to Prussia. How is the state of siege brought about? By disarming the citizens. How can a city like Cologne, which is already disarmed, be again placed in a state of siege? By first giving it back its weapons. To place Cologne again in a state of siege, i.e., to put weapons into the hands of Cologne. Long live the state of siege!
