Three-Star against Triangle

* Cologne, 16 February. A few days ago we comforted the Δ-lead article
of the “Kölnische Zeitung”, which in the elections to the Second Chamber (see
No. 33 of the Kölnische Ztg.) saw before it the defeat of the “great Centre” of the
German nation and two Chambers, one of which would not yet be constitutional,
the other not yet monarchist.

“From the opposite poles – the storms will then break loose,
a done-with past will contend with a distant, perhaps never attainable
future.” And what will become of the “Centre of the German nation”? Thus
lamented Schwanbeck.

Brüggemann, the three-starred, storms in from the “opposite pole”
against his friend in today’s issue of the same “Kölnische Zeitung”.
No Centre, says the man of the legal ground, the jovial
man who elevates the respective status quo with solemn pedantry to
an immortal principle; no Centre, that is the humour
of it. No Centre, that is no cowardice, no indecisiveness,
no hollow ambition! No Centre – that is the doctrine of it! In future
Centre will dissolve into “true” Left and “true” Right! That is
the true notice of it.
Thus the “true” man of “true” decisiveness, Brüggemann.

In other words: Brüggemann moves from the Centre to
the Right: the “parliamentary correspondence” has brought him to parliamentarising.
We tremble for the Right.

The melancholy, dying-away-in-night-thoughts Δ, however, may settle
accounts with the jovial Three-Star. Cela ne nous regarde
pas!
