Hungary. 13 February 1849

* We reprint below the 5th report of the Galician Army Corps, No. 220, 13 February 1849, from the Neue Rheinische Zeitung. According to this, the Magyar victory reports are in part confirmed. It is clear that Schlick suffered a defeat on the Theiss, near Tarczal and Tokaj; otherwise he would not have withdrawn as far as Boldogkö-Varalya, 5 miles from the battlefield. The description of the engagement, too, suffers from considerable uncertainty. It is certain that Schlick withdrew from the Theiss after a fierce engagement. That he is later said to have thrown the Hungarians back across the Theiss is a mere rumour emanating from the courts martial.

From Transylvania quite different news is arriving than was to be expected after Puchner’s latest victory reports. Bem, instead of fleeing to Thorenburg, after the battle of Hermannstadt once again threatened that town on 26 January. Puchner, although reinforced, was compelled to withdraw all his troops and concentrate them before Hermannstadt. According to this, it seems as though the battle of Hermannstadt and all the later engagements were only the prelude and the decisive struggle still remains to be fought. In Bukovina, too, people already tremble at a new incursion by Bem, who, according to Austrian reports, is said to be leading as many as 40,000 men.

In the south, according to letters from Agram in the anti-Magyar “Constitutionellen Blatt aus Böhmen”, the town of Esseg is said to have been stormed by the Imperial troops. The Magyar garrison, however, still holds out in the fortress. The dissensions between Stratimirovich and Rajachich continue.
