The Elections (January 24, 1849)

* Cologne, January 23. The electoral victory of the democrats in the Rhine Province is complete. In Neuß, Düsseldorf, Kaiserswerth, Gerresheim, Hamm near Düsseldorf, Mülheim am Rhein, Siegburg, Bonn, Andernach, Coblenz, etc., the democrats everywhere have the most decisive majority, often bordering on unanimity. And in Cologne itself two-thirds of the electors belong to the democratic party, very many of them to the working class. We shall print the two party lists tomorrow, if it is at all possible, so that one can see what credit with the people those so-called men of the people enjoy, who for six weeks have employed every means of agitation and set themselves up as the natural representatives of the inhabitants of Cologne. What their defeat costs them, we shall also print. If the remaining provinces only vote half as decisively, then truly nothing remains of the imposed constitution but “the grace of God”.
