Ludwig Raveaux. The “Kölnische Zeitung”

* Cologne, 8 January. As we announced a few days ago, Ludwig
No. 190, 9 January 1849
Neue Rheinische Zeitung.
Raveaux has been “sentenced to death by the rope” by the satellites of Windischgrätz. Welden, however, has commuted it to three years’ fortress arrest. The reasons may be guessed. The “Kölnische Zeitung”, whose Vienna correspondent, the glorious Schwanbeck, resides in Cologne, — DuMont produces, in accordance with modern economic principles, as much as possible at the lowest possible cost — will naturally declare that “the finest thing of all is that not a word of it is true”.

It will be recalled that Dumont let Vienna burn and succumb to the Croats for six weeks. In the end he hit upon, as we prophesied, the “truth”. One recalls his infamies about the June Revolution, translated from the Constitutionnel and now authentically refuted, his lies about English, his interested falsehoods about Prussian and Belgian conditions. We, however, would wish that the friend of truth “Schwanbeck,” — rara avis among Dumont’s literary owls — would give the lie to the public rumour on just one point. Fama says that he, the honest Pomeranian, together with the Germanic “Observer” Weißbrod, fabricated the notorious articles of the “Deutsche Zeitung” from “Cologne” and from the “Rhine”: Oui ou non!
