Trials of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung

* Cologne, December 5. A few days ago the editor-in-chief of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, Karl Marx, was summoned once again before the examining court. Four articles have induced the central authority to bring an action for libel: 1) Schnapphahnski, 2) an article from Breslau on Lichnowsky, 3) an article which speaks of a “falsifying” report by a certain “comical Stedtmann”, 4) the reprint of the “declaration of treachery against the people” adopted in the Eiser Hall against the Frankfurt majority on the Schleswig-Holstein question.
The Neue Rheinische Zeitung now most eagerly awaits further libel actions from Berlin, Petersburg, Vienna, Brussels and Naples.
On December 20, the first trial of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung versus the public prosecutor and gendarmes will be heard.
We have not yet heard that any Rhineland public prosecutor’s office has found any article of the Code pénal applicable to the gross, palpable illegalities of all the Rhineland authorities.
“Distinguendum est!” “Il faut distinguer” is the motto of the brave Rhineland public prosecutor’s office.
