State of Siege Everywhere

* Cologne, November 22.

Nr. 150, 23 November 1848. Extrablatt.
Neue Rheinische Zeitung.

We prophesied kicks for the Cologne Municipal Council, as the reply to the petition to the king. We were mistaken. The municipal council did indeed receive kicks, but not from the king, from Manteuffel-Brandenburg. Tant pis! We further said that after the decision of the Frankfurt Parliament, it was the duty of the Left to walk out. We hear that not only the Left, but also the Left Centre have walked out to form a democratic central committee. Tant mieux!

States of siege – that is the achievement of the March revolution. Düsseldorf placed under a state of siege! A town is besieged in order to capture it. All the towns of Prussia are gradually being placed under a state of siege in order to be reconquered. The whole of Prussia must be reconquered, because the whole of Prussia has become disloyal to Prussia itself. How is the state of siege brought about? By the disarming of the citizens. How is a town like Cologne, which has already been disarmed, placed under a state of siege once again? By first giving it back its arms. To place Cologne under a state of siege once more, i.e., to put arms into [the] hands of Cologne. Long live the state of siege!
