Roverbello, July 4. A serious engagement has taken place at Bardolino. The result is not yet known. Bardolino is in the vicinity of
Peschiera, on the shore of Lake Garda.

* Florence, July 6. In today’s sitting of the Chamber of Deputies
the Finance Minister declared in answer to an interpellation that Father Gavazzi, who by his republican-social sermons had given cause for tumult, had received the order to depart and had indeed already left. Tomorrow interpellations will be made in the Chamber regarding the situation of the
Tuscan troops and the affairs of the independence struggle in general.
Venice. The resolution of the representatives of the city and province
of Venice on the policy of the country reads, according to the *Réforme*, as follows:
‘In recognition of the high necessity of freeing all Italy from
foreign rule and of continuing the war of independence with the
greatest possible vigour, we resolve, as Venetians, in the name and in the interest of the province of Venice, and as Italians
in the interest of the entire nation, the immediate merger of the
city and province of Venice with the Sardinian states, together with
Lombardy and under the same conditions as Lombardy, to which we
wish in any case to remain for ever incorporated, and whose political
destinies we shall henceforth share with the other Venetian provinces.’
* Bozzolo, July 4. According to the *Eco del Po*, the Duke of
Genoa is said to have entered Roveredo. A second report says: The Duke of Savoy is marching with 30,000 men against Tyrol.
* Rome, July 7. Yesterday General Durando arrived here and will now
soon give an account of his participation in the freedom struggle.
In the sitting of the Chamber of Deputies Minister Mamiani declared that
the Roman soldiers who capitulated in Vicenza must fulfil the conditions entered into there, even though the Austrian general,
by the decree on the confiscation of property, for his part has violated the conditions.
* Turin, July 10. The Chamber of Deputies discussed the second union bill continuously the day before yesterday and yesterday. A warming incident occurred when the Minister of Foreign Affairs announced the vote in Venice: union with Piedmont. Then the storm of applause would not end. Whether at last today the above-mentioned
bill will be brought to a conclusion is still very doubtful. Anzani, Garibaldi’s companion, has died in Genoa; his funeral took place on the
8th inst. The national guards and the whole remaining population attended
the ceremony.
The Grand Duke of Tuscany has appointed the well-known Gioberti, commercial traveller of Charles Albert, honorary professor at the University of Pisa.
* Turin, July 10. According to reports from Modena, a part of the Piedmontese army has crossed the Po in order to advance into Venetian territory. On the night of the 5th inst., the Austrians made a
sortie against Villafranca in order to destroy the enemy’s works; they were, however, beaten back.

Naples, July 4. Yesterday evening the government caused an attack to be made by 10 official sbirri in the Café de Angelis on Silvio Spaventa, deputy from the Abruzzi, from whom they demanded the retraction of an article published by him in the *Nazionale*. The deputy, however, firmly refused, and the sbirri proceeded to the printing office of the paper, where they threatened to smash everything. Nisco went to the police director and demanded protection against the soldiery. He received the answer: The director approves the conduct of the soldiers; it is necessary to prevent by the sabre that such things are further written; he would soon train the deputies to obedience and respect, etc. (In Mainz, Mannheim etc. etc., the sabre has exercised censorship in a similar manner.) The deputy Spaventa, again threatened by the soldiery, had to take refuge with the French consul. The delegates of the Swiss Federal Diet have put up here at the New York Hotel and receive from 10 to 5 o’clock all complaints and reports that one wishes to send them concerning the events of the
15th of May.
– Yesterday evening an express messenger arrived here from Potenza for the deputies of that province with instructions that they should firmly adhere to the concessions obtained up to the 15th of May. If the government continues for another 8 days (counting from the departure of the courier, June 29) its present plans and proposals, the 5 federated provinces (Terra di Bari, Terra d’Otranto, Capitanata, Molise and Basilicata) will make common cause with Calabria. The crew of the steamer
“Roberto” is not allowed to go ashore nor to communicate with anyone, so that the latest news from Calabria may not reach the public. Pizzo has been plundered and devastated by the Neapolitan soldiers in the same
way as Naples on the 15th of May. In Bari a provisional government has already been set up; its members are:
Avella, Guarnieri, Anielle, Milella and Freso.
