Deng Xiaoping, then Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Vice Premier of the State Council, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

This resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China dated April 7, 1976, states:
"The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has discussed the counter-revolutionary incident that occurred at Tiananmen Square and Deng Xiaoping's recent conduct, and holds that the nature of Deng Xiaoping's problem has turned into an antagonistic contradiction. Acting on the proposal of the great leader Chairman Mao, the Political Bureau unanimously approves the removal of Deng Xiaoping from all posts inside and outside the Party, while retaining his Party membership so as to observe his subsequent behavior."
