[1] Wang Shiying was formerly a full-time member of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. During the Cultural Revolution, he was falsely accused and persecuted by Jiang Qing and Kang Sheng, and died unjustly in March 1968. In 1979, the CPC Central Committee decided to rehabilitate him, clear his name, and restore his reputation.
[2] On December 8, 1975, Wang Shiying’s wife, Li Guoyi, wrote to Mao Zedong, stating: “Since joining the Party in 1927, I have always been devoted to the Chairman and to the Party.” She added that her health had been poor and that she had recently suffered a stroke resulting in hemiplegia. “I hope to see a conclusion regarding Wang Shiying’s case before I die. I respectfully request that the Chairman, despite his busy schedule, look into this matter.” Mao Zedong’s comments were written on an abstract of this letter, printed by the General Office of the CPC Central Committee on December 12, 1975.
[3] Wang refers to Wang Dongxing, who at that time was a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee. On December 13, 1975, after receiving Mao Zedong’s instructions, he proposed: “Forward it to Office No. 1 of the Central Special Case Group for review and a conclusive decision.”
