Notes
〔1〕 Lu Dingyi was formerly an Alternate Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, a Secretary of the Central Secretariat, the Head of the Central Propaganda Department, and a Vice Premier of the State Council and concurrently the Minister of Culture. During the "Cultural Revolution," he was wrongly branded a member of the so-called "Peng, Luo, Lu, Yang anti-Party clique" and was cruelly persecuted. On June 8, 1979, the CPC Central Committee transmitted the "Report on the Re-examination of Comrade Lu Dingyi's Case" from the Central Organization Department, exonerating and rehabilitating him.
〔2〕 On the Mid-Autumn Festival of 1975, Lu Dingyi's children asked Deng Xiaoping, Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, to forward a letter they had written to Mao Zedong. The letter conveyed the firm conviction Lu Dingyi had expressed to Mao Zedong before his imprisonment and expressed their hope that Mao Zedong would once again save their father.
〔3〕 Xiaoping refers to Deng Xiaoping.
