〔2〕 These marginal notes were written on a report submitted to Mao Zedong by Zhang Chunqiao and Yao Wenyuan on January 29, 1975. The report stated that they were forwarding twenty excerpts, totaling five thousand characters, from Lenin’s writings on the dictatorship of the proletariat, and asked whether these conformed to the Chairman’s requirements. If this selection proved unsuitable, they proposed making another; if it was generally acceptable, they inquired whether it might be printed for the Political Bureau members’ reference, requesting the Chairman’s instructions. On February 22, 1975, the People’s Daily published “Quotations from Marx, Engels, and Lenin on the Dictatorship of the Proletariat,” comprising thirty-three quotations, twenty-three of which were by Lenin, including the twenty excerpts previously submitted by Zhang Chunqiao and Yao Wenyuan.
