[1] In this request report submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 17, 1974, it was stated that U.S. Secretary of State and Director of the National Security Council Henry Kissinger would pay his seventh visit to China from November 25 to 30. The report further noted: “From the overall perspective of its rivalry with the Soviet Union, the United States has strategic interests that require our cooperation. Therefore, President Ford is eager to arrange another visit by Kissinger within this year in order to maintain the momentum of Sino-U.S. relations.” Mao Zedong wrote this commentary when reviewing the document.
[2] Marshal Ye refers to Marshal Ye Jianying, who at that time served as Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Central Military Commission.
