The Navy meeting is entangled in historical issues. In the movement to criticize Lin Biao and rectify the style of work, getting bogged down in settling old historical accounts can easily lead one astray from the correct orientation.
First, criticize Lin Biao; second, rectify the style of work.
[1] The first and second points are Mao Zedong’s opinions on how to carry out the criticism of Lin Biao and the rectification of the style of work, put forward regarding the enlarged meeting of the Fifth Plenary Session of the Fourth Party Committee of the Navy of the People’s Liberation Army, held from July 1972 to February 1973. On a certain day in September 1972, Zhou Enlai, acting on Mao Zedong’s instructions, presided over a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and summoned the leading members of the Navy for a talk, conveying Mao Zedong’s opinions. These words were quoted in boldface in the “Report on the Situation of the Enlarged Meeting of the Fifth Plenary Session of the Fourth Party Committee of the Navy,” forwarded by the CPC Central Committee on February 24, 1973. The Central Committee’s comment forwarding this report was submitted to Mao Zedong for review, and Mao Zedong gave the instruction: “Agreed.”
