Comrade Kang Sheng:
This document can be handled according to your opinion. In a sentence, “praise the
emperor” was written as “annoy the emperor”. Please correct it.
Mao Zedong

[1] This is a comment on a report submitted to Mao Zedong on January 30, 1970, by Kang
Sheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central
Committee. In his report, Kang Sheng wrote: "Last year, when compiling the fifth volume of
Mao's Selected Works, I recalled that at the September 1941 Politburo meeting, the
Chairman had written an outline for a speech criticizing Wang Ming's capitulationism." "At
the Politburo meeting on January 26 of this year, I reported this matter. Upon hearing of this
outline, the comrades unanimously requested that several copies be printed for the
Politburo comrades to review." "I have now prepared a draft and am sending it to the
Chairman for review. I also ask whether it should be printed and distributed to all Politburo
comrades for their perusal. I hope to receive the Chairman's approval." In 1941, Mao
Zedong, in response to Wang Ming's tendency to compromise on the issue of the united
front, wrote: "He knows how to praise the emperor without proposing any tasks." "He does
not make class analysis and has no Leninist spirit." "He adheres to the principle of the
masses, and compromises as well as the principle of struggle." In the speech outline Kang
Sheng submitted for review, the phrase "praise the emperor" was printed as "annoy the
emperor." Mao Zedong corrected this during his review.
